Treatment strategies for myofunctional therapy with the FaceFormer®
Goal
Clinical presentation of a new concept for the diagnosis and treatment of myofunctional disorders of the mimic muscles and the masticatory muscles.
Material and method
Clinical examples are used to illustrate indications and explain effectiveness. Passive and active therapeutic properties of the FaceFormer are demonstrated on a group of 12 patients, objectified using the lip force meter (Myo-Bar-Meter, ISST-Unna) and compared with a comparison group of 12 patients. The statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS program (version 10.5.2).
Results
There was a statistically highly significant (p=0.008) improvement in incompetent lip posture compared to the control group. In the case of sucking habits, a statistically significant reduction was found in the patient group – at least in the context of short-term monitoring between 3 and 6 months (p<0.03). The evaluation of subjective wearing comfort was clearly in favor of the FaceFormer compared to other myofunctional training appliances.
Conclusions
As the first positive changes can already be diagnosed within the first two weeks of therapy and, according to the patients, the new device presented is clearly better accepted than other aids, the FaceFormer appears to be a device that is available for widespread clinical use
